What A Day!

I managed to talk about parasites (including galls and cuckoo bumblebees) to different groups of people, and saw some galls too! Plus, spotted a Ruby Tiger moth caterpillar and some Bee Orchid rosettes.

A tiny gall is attached to the vein of an oak leaf. The gall is pale green and spiky and the tips of the spikes are a reddish-purple color. This gall is caused by a tiny wasp in the genus Acraspis.

"Desperately Seeking:
Hackberry Nipplegall Makers"
(c) constance lee menefee

The flying nipplegall makers
are tiny psyllids -
which are True Bugs with piercing,
sucking mouthparts -
not merely generic y'all "Buqs"
that could be anything our lazy
fear-marinated brains
call clinging, crawling, burrowing,
multi-legged, stinging, flying,
biting (especially biting)
offending annoyances ...
anything is "Bug" when it scares us
or offends primal human aesthetics
by being grubby, smooshy, voiceless,
and chompy (especially chompy) ...
the gally hackberry leaves
are full of warty yurts, each
caused by sap-sucking nymphs
that quite discombobulate
leaf structures
into little bug nest lumps -
growing, swelling, finally hatching
into more bugs that lay eggs
which beget nymphs,
sending nature's Ferris wheel
spinning again!

New paper from the Martinson Lab! A fun study where we find a nice example of cascading speciation and describe three new species. Plus some exciting data to suggest that ecological guild may influence the impacts of host-associated differentiation. A 🧵. #galls #insects 🧪 doi.org/10.1111/mec....

Yet more end-of-summer #galls. These are 'robin's pincushions': galls on rose induced by cynipid #wasp Dipolepsis rosae. Tangly, spiky ball serves as edible home for wasp's larvae, which develop in separate chambers within, safe from predators and never lacking food. Ingenious! Mersea Island, Essex.

More end-of-summer #galls. Two #mites infect this alder: Acalitus brevitarsus, which causes leaf to blister (topside) and grow clusters of glassy 'hairs' (underside), and Eriophyes inangulis, which does same but in nooks at main vein joints. Larvae develop in these growths. Bungay, Suffolk, England.

Another late post from summer observations: #galls of Aceria erinea, tiny mite parasitising walnut (Juglans regia). Maybe galls aren't world's prettiest things, but it's extraordinary how some animals and other creatures have evolved to co-opt plants directly into their life-cycles. Bungay, Suffolk.

An old Hop Gall on this Oak caused by the asexual generation of the gall wasp Andricus foecundatrix. I expect the inner gall fell out in the summer and a wasp of the sexual generation will emerge from that next Spring.

Spangles! These very cool common spangle galls were on a large number of the fallen oak leaves we saw beside Loch Lomond last week. Produced by the common spangle gall wasp, each houses a tiny larvae that will emerge in spring

Here's the weird distribution of Phylloteras sigma. Likely fully explained by the rarity of gall zealots and their tendency to live near major metropolitan areas. The 106 observations were uploaded to iNaturalist by just 15 people. Most of them by @jeffc666.bsky.social. #inaturalist #galls

Phylloteras sigma (Cynipidae). Currently my favorite local gall because it's so darn cute. You can find them on the undersides of white oak leaves in the eastern United States, and apparently also in Chicago. Likely elsewhere but they are tiny and easy to miss. #galls #wasps #cynipidae #insects

Mature stroma of American tar spot (Rhytisma americanum) on a maple leaf, one of my finds during the most recent Gall Week (Sept 6-14). For such a common and beautiful fungus it's surprising that the species was described relatively recently (1998). #fungi #galls
