A Bumblebee shaped insect with a fluffy looking light brown body and a black tail. It has a long straight proboscis held out in front of it. Its translucent wings are held back and have small black dots on them. It's resting on a light coloured hessian bag. It's pointing upwards.

Plot with stable carbon on the X-axis and stable nitrogen on the Y-axis, showing the difference in isotope values between predator (black-legged kittiwake) and prey (fish and invertebrates). Black-legged kittiwakes are in the middle of the plot, below Arctic cod.
After accounting for dietary discrimination, #δ13C and #δ15N #isotope values in kittiwake livers were at a lower #trophiclevel than Arctic cod.
What does this mean? While kittiwakes do consume Arctic cod (as seen in stomachs), stomach analysis may underestimate soft tissue prey, such as #inverts.

Vernal Pool Tadpole Shrimp are invertebrates and do a lot of molting of their carapace along the way to gaining size. In well-populated pools you can often see shed carapaces/molts just floating in the surface or around the margins of the pool. Makes it nice and easy to determine presence! #inverts

A wonderful scarce blue tiger butterfly, just resting on a branch. His wings show a wonderful pattern of pale blue stripes and dots, while the body is covered with white dots. The deep green of the forest still makes it more beautiful
An amazing crested serpent eagle with a funny expressive face. I got this photo right on the moment that he was screaming to other eagles of same specie. He's perched on a dry branch of a giant tree, showing those wonderful yellow eyes. The brown feathers covers it's body, but black on the head.
