"Also, I'm bleeding profusely, so please stay for a while*" ... The voice coming through the receiver faded. Where was he? Or, more precisely: When was he? Oh, this was a song she knew too well. Only without the bleeding. Why did he never listen to her? Sometimes, she felt like they were re-living the same scene over, and over, again for dynasties. Perhaps, they were. Each time with slight variations, fused in fate until they solved a problem they couldn't see. She could try, and reconstruct the settings he used on the time machine. Then she'd definitely reach the correct timeline, but at the time he had first arrived, not at the time he was during the last contact. Which meant, she'd probably find him too late. Perhaps, she should first try to find his frequency on the radio, again. But the geomagnetic disturbances the Earth currently experienced would make this almost impossible, and also, what if he couldn't reply, any more? Or, she could simply cut the strings, change the tune, and leave him to his fate. Maybe that was the way out of this hollowing loop. She carefully measured the weight of this thought against her conscience ... then she stepped out into the Spring sun, and walked away. The lightness of freedom surpassed everything. "Trina? ... Catrina? ... Are ... are you still ... still there?" Tom listened, but his receiver stayed silent. He could feel his life force fading. The trees around him were still bare, but the dusty perfume of the first warm wind reached his nostrils before it touched the skin. The hair on his hands stood up in anticipation of the soft brush ... but his last breath left his lungs first. The giant serpent had eyed him from the shadows. This slow bleeding had been delicious. And, oh, such sweet fear! Only the peaceful ending left a bitter aftertaste. The basilisk left the body where it was, as to not spoil the carefully hoarded pile of bones, that built its home, with such an unpleasant aroma. © Stefanie Neumann - @KokopelliB…
