This Week, In a Galaxy Far, Far Away: Grogu Will Not Speak In ‘The Mandalorian and Grogu’, But He Did Just Crash the Oscars
Happy Oscar Sunday, and welcome to a new edition of “This Week, In a Galaxy Far, Far Away” — which I started while Grogu makes a special appearance at the ceremony. In the meantime, Ludwig Göransson has just won his third Oscar! Sigourney Weaver and Pedro Pascal, who introduced the cute puppet, are also the main characters of tonight’s column, which is posted as we are about to enter the final two-month stretch before _The Mandalorian and Grogu_ lightspeeds into theaters.
Before we get started, you might enjoy Thursday’s episode of _SWNN Live!_, which went on for a little too long — and partially that’s my fault. Watch out for a changing number of guests too! You might also be interested in reading Josh’s latest Character Spotlight on Black Krrsantan.

## Three Things That May Have Flown Casual
* _Speaking of awards…_ We had a rare public appearance by George Lucas last Sunday at the Saturn Awards, where he was honored with the Dr. Donald A. Reed Founder’s Award, presented by Mark Hamill. After seeing the pictures, I can only ask: why does George Lucas look not one day older than he did when he signed Lucasfilm off to Disney? I guess that’s what being a billionaire and being married to a multi-hyphenate successful businesswoman does to an 80-year-old…
* _Three more weeks to go_ : We have a new article on _Maul: Shadow Lord_ and how the Lucasfilm Animation team challenged itself with coming up with an entirely new visual style. The show comes out on April 6.
* Publishing updates: We have the cover and the first details on the second book in the _Reign of the Empire_ trilogy, _Edge of the Abyss_. We also had the listing of the next four novels coming to the Essential Legends Collection this fall.

## Quote of the Week — and More From The Mandalorian and Grogu
> “[Grogu is] another perfect example of a character that has to emote and you have to feel connected to, and he never speaks a word …
>
> [Fans will love Grogu] on the big screen, and he never says a word.”
That was Kathleen Kennedy talking to Variety about a, well, _plethora_ of subjects — and eventually landing on Grogu. Is she lying here? I doubt it — for once, she wasn’t asked if Grogu would speak, she just said it out right. And yet, as I argued on _SWNN Live!_ , I simply think this means that Grogu will evolve in a different direction in the movie. But he will still be an important character to the story, not just the plot.
_The Mandalorian and Grogu_ was also on the news this week for a different quote — which was actually a misquote. _Empire Magazine_ ‘s printed article covering the new film mentioned how the film used a lot more practical sets than the Disney Plus series, but social media aggregators misinterpreted the following sentence about the Volume as if the film didn’t use the technology at all:
> “The series used ‘Volume’ LED walls extensively for reactive in-camera backgrounds, cutting costs and accelerating production […] But _The Mandalorian And Grogu_ production brought massive practical sets […], more Phil Tippett studio stop-motion, puppets galore, and expensive CG characters, all designed for IMAX.”
Ben Travis, the magazine’s deputy online editor, clarified on Twitter that they never actually said the film didn’t use the Volume. They actually don’t know either way. But let’s be clear here: there is no way they didn’t use the Volume in the majority of the movie. They just had a larger budget this time around for the other scenes. I mean, this film was shot almost in secret inside the Manhattan Beach sound stages for months.
Finally, a 60-second spot for the movie started circulating on social media during the week, and it looks like it may have just aired during the Oscars telecast. The WGA website also confirmed that Noah Kloor will be credited as co-writer in the movie.

Miguel Fernández is a Spanish student that has movies as his second passion in life. His favorite movie of all time is _The Lord of the Rings,_ but he is also a huge Star Wars fan. However, fantasy movies are not his only cup of tea, as movies from Scorsese, Fincher, Kubrick or Hitchcock have been an obsession for him since he started to understand the language of filmmaking. He is that guy who will watch a black and white movie, just because it is in black and white.
